the jungle

It was early morning and already sunny. The ‘East Wind’ was sailing slowly along the coastline towards the west. The ship was remarkably unscathed – none of the masts had broken, and the hull was in good shape. Only a few crewmembers were needed to deal with small repairs, while the others gazed in awe at the mysterious world unfolding before them.

A line of sand was visible as far as the eye could see, sometimes snow white, then black a bay later. Further north, the water was green. A sailor yelled down from the crow’s nest on the foremast: ‘RIVER ahoy!’

An enormous estuary appeared.

Belch ordered the anchor to be lowered. ‘We need fresh water – two full barrels were ripped from their positions and swept overboard during the storm. The others are almost empty. We will replenish our drinking supplies from the river water.’

At noon, they lowered a tender onto the water and placed the empty barrels into it. Four sailors under the command of Mane rowed towards the river, which led inland like a broad roadway. It wasn’t long before the men reappeared with the newly filled barrels.

The sun was setting now, and the mood among the crew had relaxed a little. The repairs were going well, and the barrels were secured, back in their allotted positions. The pleasant weather was almost enough to make them forget the deadly hurricane. Yet the mysterious events that they had experienced troubled them sufficiently to prevent them from completely feeling at ease. Nonetheless, they could now, at least, recover physically from the strains of the voyage.

Belch and Karek stood alone at the prow – they were forging plans.

‘I think that we will find the mystery in the heart of the island. In the middle of the mountains. That’s what I understand from my dream.’

‘Now that we really have found a continent that has been inexplicably hidden for over a thousand years, how can I possibly doubt your madcap ideas, Karek?’ pondered Belch. ‘The river’s current doesn’t seem particularly strong. Which means, we should row upriver as far as we can.’

Karek nodded. The mountains surely fed the river with their springs and rainfall. Which meant, they could use the tenders to explore the interior of the island and approach the mountains by simply rowing northward upstream.

‘Who should take part in this expedition?’

Belch fiddled with his golden earring. ‘I suggest we only use one tender. The boat holds eight people. I am not going to let you go without me, so that leaves six places. If we bring weapons, provisions and rucksacks, then we’re down to five.’

‘And don’t forget Fata. I don’t quite understand what role the bird is playing in this whole story – but I’m absolutely convinced that she must accompany us.’

Belch, a great admirer of the Kabo queen, nodded. ‘Beard has to come with us. And Brawl. We’ve no idea what to expect and might well need skilled fighters.’

Karek silently agreed with Belch although it meant that he wouldn’t be able to go with the complete swordmaster’s hand.
